Erica is a seasoned attorney with an accomplished career that spans twenty-five years. She has served in multiple leadership roles in private practice, public service, sports, and the in-house legal departments for corporate and non-profit organizations. Erica has deep experience handling serious, high-stakes, and complex matters for companies with either national, multinational, or global business operations. In addition to her legal work, Erica is available as a consultant for hire on matters for which she has superior legal skills and experience. She is also a dynamic and influential speaker often tapped for speaking engagements.
Erica started her legal career in Washington, D.C., where she was a litigation associate at two prominent international law firms. Erica's practice included product liability litigation, white collar defense, and commercial litigation. She litigated headline-generating “Fen-Phen” wrongful death cases and claims for irreversible cardiac abnormalities and fatal pulmonary diseases attributable to the drug. She also handled sensitive and confidential projects arising out of the U.S. government’s landmark racketeering lawsuit against “Big Tobacco” and the litigation challenging the health effects of light cigarettes. Erica’s white collar work included criminal prosecutions and internal investigations, with an emphasis on the Sarbanes-Oxley Act, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
Erica moved from private practice to public service when appointed Chief of Litigation in the General Litigation Division of the District of Columbia Office of the Attorney General. Erica was later appointed General Counsel for the District of Columbia Department of Human Resources.
She managed serious and high-risk cases that generated intense public scrutiny. Erica litigated Section 1983 cases alleging excessive and deadly force by the police in violation of the Fourth, Fifth, and Eighth amendments to the United States Constitution. She also litigated Section 1983 claims for false imprisonment, false arrest, improper search and seizure, and the wrongful death or abuse of minors under the care of a municipal agency. Erica's other litigated matters included race, age, sex, disability, and national origin discrimination claims, equal pay violations, retaliation, and harassment cases. She counseled public officials and management on a wide range of labor and employment issues that impacted thousands of municipal employees. She investigated the alleged misappropriation of funds, improper hiring practices, and other claims of illegal conduct by municipal employees and public officials.
Erica leveraged the exceptional skills that she sharpened in private practice and public service to become Associate General Counsel for the nation’s largest retailer. She initially managed the company's responses to subpoenas issued by the Department of Justice, the Securities & Exchange Commission, the Department of Homeland Security, the Federal Bureau of Investigations, and multiple other state and federal agencies. Erica later joined the global investigations group and spent considerable time in five countries across Central, North, and South America. She was dispatched to Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Mexico, and Nicaragua, where she investigated alleged corrupt business practices, ethics violations, and other employee misconduct that implicated the FCPA.
Self-motivated and fearless, Erica transitioned from corporate counsel to a leadership role in professional sports. She served as Chief Operating Officer for the National Basketball Players Association (NBPA), the union for basketball players in the NBA. After the NBPA, Erica was Chief Legal Officer for public university and member institution in one of the Power Five collegiate athletic conferences. She then served as Chief Legal Officer for one of the Power Five athletic conferences. Erica's work in professional and collegiate sports provided her deep exposure to the business of sports.
One of the nation's oldest environmental non-profit organizations recruited Erica to be its Chief Legal Officer as part of its response to systemic issues uncovered during an internal investigation. Erica' s effectiveness in enterprise risk management and remediating lapses in internal controls drew her to the role. She had oversight of the organization's legal, governance, compliance, and labor relations functions. She advised its Board of Directors and served as a thought partner to the Board and the executive leadership team. Erica also supervised compliance officers, labor relations staff, and a litigation team within the legal department that included more than fifty attorneys and staff who leveraged litigation, advocacy, and grassroots organizing to fight climate change, protect clean air, water, and wilderness, and pursue justice for communities threatened by pollution.
Erica graduated summa cum laude and salutatorian from the University of Mississippi School of Law, where she earned a Juris Doctorate in 1998. Erica holds a Bachelor of Arts in English from Tougaloo College awarded in 1995.
Erica clerked for the Honorable E. Grady Jolly on the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.
